The weather has started to get into its summer time pattern here on the East Coast of Florida with the hit days and afternoon showers. Looking at the extended forecast for the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach area it’s calling for chances of afternoon showers into next week. The weather has not been the only thing hot here in Central Florida the bite has been as well. With the bait moving throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and into Mosquito Lagoon the game fish are following.
Look for the trout and redfish to be holding in and around the bait pods . The black drum can still be found in the shallow sand holes and mud flats feeding in crustaceans. The snook have been holding on deeper shorelines and around structure that has had a constant flow of moving water with bait near by. The redfish, trout and snook have been very receptive to both live bait and artificials . The black drum have been focusing on shrimp the past few weeks. Highs in the nineties and clear skies tells me that summer has arrived here in Central Florida. The temperatures have definitely been hot but so has the bite. The redfish , trout and black drum have been chewing well with the occasional snook in the mix as well. The flats and backwaters of New Smyrna Beach have been alive with bait fish and game fish.
Targeting the shorelines and oyster beds in the north have been working well with both artificials and live bait. Moving south into Mosquito Lagoon the shallow grass flats have been holding a lot of fish and live bait has been working well when presented correctly. As we move further into summer our days will continue to heat up creating afternoon showers . These showers will in return cool our afternoons down along with cool the water temps down a bit. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 We have had a high pressure sitting over FL for the last week or so producing clear sunny days and lack of rain. The only down fall is it has also brought some strong winds these past few days. The wind has not affected the bite though , with several species like redfish, trout, black drum and snook still chewing.
The bait has worked its way up on to the shallow grass flats and oyster bars and the fish are not far away. When conditions allow plugs, spoons and soft plastics have been working well along with live and cut bait as well. These winds sure continue to decrease as the week moves on making for some great sight fishing. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Spring time seems to be upon us here in Central Florida. The weather has been starting to warm and bringing on a new pattern for our fish. The bait has started to move out of the deeper channels and onto the shallow grass flats and the fish have followed. Look for the redfish and trout to be milling around in the shallow grass looking for an easy meal.
The black drum have been holding on the mud and sand bottoms looking for crustaceans like shrimp and crabs. North in the New Smyrna area there has been a variety of fish holding in and around the mangroves like snook , redfish, trout , jacks and flounder to mention a few. They have all been chewing well on both artificials and live bait and as the weather continues to warm the bite will only get better. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather has been awesome this past week with some chamber of commerce Central Florida conditions . With this great weather has also brought a great bite through out the waters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon.
The clear skies and calm mornings has produced some great sight fishing for redfish, trout and black drum. The pods of bait have moved on to the flats and the fish have followed. Look for the bait pods and the fish will not be far. Plugs , spoons, soft plastics and live bait have all been working well. It looks as though the weather will continue for a bit so the bite should only get better. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 This past week has been a little on the breezy side making it a little challenging on the sight fishing but challenge excepted. We have been doing well on redfish, snook and trout and it looks as though the weather is going to continue through this week so I do not see the bite changing.
The bait has worked its way from the creeks out to the shallows and the redfish and trout have followed . The snook are still hanging in the deeper water around structure throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters. Live shrimp , cut bait and finger mullet have been working well along with a variety of artificial’s . The extended forecast looks good coming into next week which will only increase the bite. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Just when I thought the fronts were finished here in the Central FL area there seems to be another traveling across the south this week. It doesn’t look like the temps are going to drop drastically but it will bring some gusty conditions for a couple of days.
With this front being on the minor side the bite should continue to stay strong throughout the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon waters. The shallow flats have been full of life with bait pods and fish milling around in and out the pot holes. They have been receptive to both artificial and live bait making for a good variety of baits to use. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 So far this March weather has been a little unstable from frontal lines dipping down to wind and rain but it has not stopped the bite. The fish have been adapting well throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach . Whichever direction the wind is pushing the bait the fish have not been far behind. Live shrimp , finger mullet and cut bait have all been working well along with soft plastics and plugs early.
The redfish, trout, snook and black drum have been staying pretty hungry. It looks as though we may get another late season front move through but I believe this will probably be our last one for the year. We all know what comes next summer and that Florida heat. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Just when you think Spring has arrived and the fish start to get into their Spring time pattern Mother Nature says not yet with a little winter blast of cool air. These late season fronts usually do not stick around long enough to effect the patterns of these Mosquito Lagoon fish. Look for the fish holding on the deeper edges and shorelines early then moving to the shallow flats and sand holes as the sun gets higher.
We still have good amount of bait spread out from New Smyrna Beach south into Mosquito Lagoon and as the week moves on and gets warmer that bait will move to the shallows . The bite has been good on live finger mullet , cut bait and shrimp along with soft plastics , plugs and spoons. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather has definitely made a turn for the better this past week and looks to be sticking around through this week as well. With the warmer temperatures hitting us here in the Central Florida area it has really turned the fish on . The water has warmed up a bit pushing the bait up on the shallow flats and making the game fish follow.
The trout and redfish have been hanging along the edges of the shallow grass flats where as the black drum can be found in the larger sand holes throughout Mosquito Lagoon. We still have a large number of blue fish throughout the waters of New Smyrna Beach along with some snook that are starting to play. The bite has been good overall and with stable weather for a while it looks like it could continue for a little bit. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 |
